Well the pacing of the game is faster, you have a pet that can carry extra stuff and send him to the nearest town to sell stuff for you. Now in II you can also make him buy potions and bring them back. The ui and inventory management is better. It's more like a classic Diablo evolved and modernized. Blizzard went the more dramatic and slower paced route.

Since I've preordered T2, I have an extra Torchlight copy that I can give you if you want. They have fixed and refined a lot of things in the second edition but the basics are still there. Do not play at normal difficulty it's too much of a cakewalk.
